Olympic cushion

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

Have any of you heard of Woolsack? It has a project running to take British wool to the olympics by donating a wool cushion to every athlete that requests one. I’ve considered making one a few times but failed to actually do it – until now.

The whole cushion is made from Blue Faced Leicester wool. Looks real fun laid out. On the reverse I thought I’d write the type of wool and where and when it was given out.

I thought I’d checked all the regulations but it seems I’m not allowed to have the words London 2012 on there. so after obliterating London, here’s the finished item,

I’ve machine stitched the two sides together with a free hand wavy zig zag seam.

This has gone with me to Woolfest, where it’ll be stuffed and stitched up ready to be donated to an athlete. If you fancy getting involved there’s still time and the next big stuffing event is at Fibre East.

2013 Diary

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

I actually have a teaching date agreed for September 2013 plus all the wool shows have announced dates for next year so, I thought it about time that I sourced a diary for next year. Bright and colourful would suit me I thought, unfortunately bright and colourful was not what I found. Black and boring was what I found so I had a hunt through my stash.

What I found in my stash was a piece of nuno felted fabric which I’d tie dyed and left waiting
for a “project”. Makes a nice diary cover doesn’t it?

The front is my favourite, it has light, dark and movement.

The back is definitely colourful.

Of course, I couldn’t resist adding a little stitch, in bright pink! Little pleasures are a wonderful
thing and it does indeed provide me with a little pleasure each time I catch sight
of it in my bag or have need to use it :-)

Swaledale flowers

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

For the exhibition in Swaledale next month I thought I’d make a small contribution. It really is small you know, it has to fit inside a 5″ cube. What to make has exercised my mind for some time and many ideas have been rejected. In the end, it was a sudden decision to make the roses.

I’ve made them as three separate flowers, each of which can be detached from the landscape
background and worn as a brooch if desired.

Update on Swaledale pots

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

You may recall, I liked the blue one but not the pink one.

Then I saw lovely mohair yarn in my stash and decided to give the pink one another chance. So after going stitch mad,

here it is re-felted and finished.

I liked it so much I just had to have a go on the blue one too.

I’m much happier now :-)

We have a website!

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

Tracy has been very busy and created a website for the exhibition. Please go and check it out. We’ve already had interest from a number of people including felt makers in America and Canada. As people confirm their involvement we hope to put a list of who is involved and where they’re from.

This whole idea was insired by Felt United and we really hope that lots of you will want to join in.

We’d also like people to submit teaser photos of their work in progress with a full photographic reveal in October. This is going to be good. Note to self – go make some felt

Jewellery workshop

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Just a quick selection of some of the work created yesterday.

We made brooches and necklaces and a wide variety of beads and pebbles. Some of the beads aren’t shown and nor is the final pendant which sadly people have to take home to finish. A very productive day though. I’m sure when beads ahve been added they’ll look fab.

Swaledale

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

I met Helen from the Swaledale Museum in Reeth earlier this year. During our chat Helen mentioned how nice it would be to have some Swaledale wool fibres on show during the forthcoming Felt Contained exhibition. With my Adelaide Walker hat on I offered to supply the fibres and with my own hat on I offered to make a small felt pot using Swaledale fibres. I’ve even talked Freyalyn into spinning some wool up for us so that Helen will have wool tops, spun wool and felted wool.

Made from hand dyed Swaledale this was my first attempt. Pink interior, then blue, and green layers decorated with dark purple and bright pink.  The colours looked great before I began felting but I’ve quickly fallen out with this. In fact, I’m not sure I’ll finish felting it.

This pale blue pot is much better and I’m happy with this. It has a lovely solid feel in my hand and I prefer the straight sided shape. Looks like this is the one the museum will be receiving.

Paperwork !*$!!

Monday, June 11th, 2012

I attend to all my own paperwork and that of two businesses but the paperwork that’s guaranteed to get me going is the avalanch I receive on a regular basis for my mum.

Every time one payment is adjusted so are at least three others, each of which seems to require two or three letters and lots of calculations on my part to ensure that Mum isn’t losing out on this merry go round. After a prolonged hospital stay it took three calls and a visit before we could get disability allowances reinstated.

It doesn’t feel long in between filing them but boy does it mount up. How on earth are older people expected to be able to cope with it, it’s ludicrous.

Sorry, rant over, normal service resumes tomorrow.

Exhibition opportunity

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

Some of you may have heard of Felt United and this year is the 4th anniversary of this international felt event. Good friend Tracy Markey and I decided we should do something to celebrate and so can offer you the opportunity to be involved with a felt exhibition in Perthshire in October.

The dying of the sun – a meditation on fire

To celebrate the fourth annual International Day of Felt, Tracy Markey and Angela Barrow invite you to participate in their exhibition to be held at The Barn Gallery, Perthshire.  The exhibition will run from 5th to 12th October 2012.

There are two opportunities available and you are welcome to submit work for one or both of them.

Main Exhibition:   Artwork can be 2D or 3D and must contain an element of felt.  However, mixed/multi media pieces are encouraged.  Artists can submit up to three pieces for consideration.  Please be as creative as you wish with your interpretation of the theme!

Collaborative piece:   With your help, we are going to create a huge fire inspired piece to form part of the exhibition. We are seeking pieces for inclusion … think flames; smoke; sparks; embers …  these will then be assembled in situ to create one large piece of work.

Your piece(s) can be any size, shape and combination of colours, as long as they are made from felt (other textiles can be included but should not be the main material).

To register your interest, and receive further details, please send me an email by Thursday 28th June 2012.

Nuno bag – part two

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

Do you remember this bag? Very purple with a nuno felted interior and extra fabrics on the outside. It still needed a handle and a closing mechanism. Here it is finished.

I made a small felt rope which I knotted on itself and then stitched to the bag for a catch.

For the handle I made a longer rope with fabric inclusions. After making small holes in the sides I threaded the handle through and knotted it on itself. I like the asymmetrical look and the double handle.

From the back.

From the front. My slightly more quirky bags are always my favourite ones. More nuno bags to follow.
