3D workshops

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Next weekend I have two days of 3D workshops in which you can choose to make several smaller items or one larger item per day. As the technique for 3D is very similar on all items I can offer you the choice of creating bags

vases

or pods and other abstract 3D structures.

There will be fifteen different British fibres to work with, try one or try them all!  Most are natural undyed colours but there will be some dyed Blue Faced Leicester and Swaledale to choose from. Choose to book one day or book both. If you book two days you can make different items on each day or work on one extra large one!!

Moving on

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Progress on my table runner hasn’t been quite as rapid as I would like but it is definitely moving on. All the pieces are pre-felted and cut out ready for the final felting stage.

I’m really liking the subtlety of all the natural British wools. My daughter thinks the icing looks like clouds.

Pictures of a finished runner very soon I hope.

Working up to it

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

There’s an idea for a table runner that I’ve had in my head for quite a while now. Over the last few days I’ve managed to make a few pieces of pre-felt for it and I think today might be the day for cracking on with it.

It’s a simple design which I think will look quite stylish in varying shades of natural coloured wools with a twist which I’ll reveal later. The process began by identifying which breeds I’d like to use. So far my list contains, Blue Faced Leicester, Masham, Shetland, Manx, Black Welsh Mountain, Jacob and Cheviot.

When I need pre-felts for projects like this I always make them in 2 layers. After wetting the fibres out,If there are no patterns or embellishments, I don’t rub, I just roll, gradually increasing the pressure as I go along. One of the considerations of working with pre-felts is to have them all at the same stage before you begin to put them together. This means that I’ve created a BFL pre-felt after only 400 rolls but the Black Welsh Mountain took 1,200 rolls to achieve the same state.

Don’t they look lovely? I hope to show you the next stage and dare I say it?, a completed runner, very soon.

Commissions

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I’m a lucky girl this week. I’ve just received two commissions for a total of four brooches, now I just have to find the time to make them. How many hours in a day again?

It’s always good to be challenged to work in new colours too and I’m always happy to take commissions.

Autumn Workshops and Events

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

It came as somewhat of a surprise last weekend to discover my first workshop is next Tuesday, it seems to have come upon me so quickly! That has prompted me to think perhaps it’s time to let you know what the autumn has in store so you can check your diaries and make sure you you don’t miss anything.

17th September Flowers – this workshop now has 2 spaces available and is a popular workshop so don’t wait too long to book.

24/25th SeptemberMasham Sheep Fair. I love this event and go each year. This year of course I’ll be there with Adelaide Walker so do pop into the old schoolhouse and see us.

30th September Pictures – sorry this is fully booked but I may run another in the new year if anyone would be interested.

1st October third international day of felt. Felt United This years colours are red, purple, blue. I’d like to do something to celebrate this day but am devoid of ideas, can anyone help with suggestions? p.s. nothing too big please

1st/2nd October British wool weekend Sat and Sun – you can book for just one or both days of this weekend. We’ll be working in both 2D and 3D with over 15 different fibres on offer. If you choose to work smaller I’d expect you to be able to make 3 items per day, so lots of chance to work with the different breeds.

7th/8th October North Pennines Wool event.Looks an interesting event.

9th October Sunday – English Tea workshop – table runners, tea cosies, coasters, mats and tea light holders.  Runners are an interesting item to make as they can be abstract, patterned, pictorial etc. and really could be used on your table or on the wall.

20th-23rd October Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair at Manchester. A very good quality fair with some stunning exhibits.

22nd October (Sat) Stitched in felt – book covers combining felt with stitch. You don’t need to be able to do anything more than running stitch so don’t worry if you’re not an embroiderer. Your finished piece will cover an A5 size book/diary or use it as a picture.

27th October (thurs) 3D Pods – weird and wonderful, with spikes, spy holes, tails. A real fun workshop

16th November (wed) Felt for Christmas – cards, baubles, garlands, wreaths. Felt that sparkles.

19th November (sat) Mixed Media and Texture. Incorporating: rag rugging, knitting, crochet and weaving into your felt for fabulous texture. No previous experience of any of these crafts is necessary.Use it as a discovery day or leave with a fabulous picture. Add fabrics, flaps, pockets, recycled items and lace to your felt. You’ll be amazed at the number and variety of objects that can be  felted in.

24th-27th November Knitting and Stitching Show at Harrogate. I usually help out with demonstrations on the International feltmakers stand, see you there.

3rd December (sat) Lattice and frilly felt scarves.  All wool scarves to keep you warm and glamorous looking all winter The key to a frilly scarf is in the laying out, come and learn the technique in the last fun workshop of the year.

Suggestions for other workshops are always welcome and I am, of course, working on next year’s batch now. Also, if you know of any other events that we felters would be interested in do please let me know and I’ll add them to the list.

British Wool Weekend

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

It’s the new British Wool Weekend show at Harrogate today and tomorrow. I’m not sure that I’ll manage to get along so if any of you do, please let me know what you think of the show as I may take a stall next year. Always presuming it’s a success this year and runs again.

With the emphasis firmly on British you can expect to see anything related to British sheep including ice cream, fibres, yarns and finished products.

If you have made a cushion cover for the “Woolsack” project, there will be a “Fill and Natter” area where you can fill your cushion cover with British Wool stuffing.  Watch the entertaining Sheep Show Man sheering a sheep, visit the Alpacas and Angora Rabbits.

Blue vase

Friday, August 19th, 2011

I haven’t managed a lot of felt making recently but here is one I have managed to finish. The fibre is Blue Faced Leicester in a mix of  blue and turquoise with a little purple added. The turquoise I hand dyed earlier in the year. I’ve included crystal organza, silk chiffon and parts of an old damaged silk cushion into the felt to give texture and shine.

Also added is blue and purple roving, blue yarn plus turquoise, copper and blue silk fibres. I like the feeling of movement that all these additions give the vase. As before, I have used a glass liner so that I can use this for fresh flowers if required. Given the shape, the liner cannot be removed but you can get your hand in for cleaning.

The height is 29cms. If you look carefully you can see the tip of a cat tail. Have you ever tried keeping four hungry cats at bay whilst you take a quick photo?

A promise

Friday, August 12th, 2011

I made a promise some weeks ago that I would let you know when Blue Faced Leicester fleece curls became available at Adelaide Walker. I used them on this little pot.

The BFL is now in stock at £3 per 100g of washed fleece and as you can see it dyes up well too.

Oh well!

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

I’ve been so stressed out with so many things to do, no time to pause, to enjoy the holidays with my daughter or to get through my very very long ‘to do’ list. So sadly, I’ve pulled out of the Art in the Pen Show this week as I really don’t feel I can do it justice this year.

So I now have a little breathing space to sort things for my Mum (not well) and spend some time with my daughter. It’s also shortened my to do list – yippee!

I will now rout my daughter from her bed as the weather is glorious today, too good to spend all day in bed.

Time to panic?

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

It may well be time to panic. In less than two weeks it’ll be time for Art in the Pen show as Skipton cattle market. I really enjoy this show it always has fantastic exhibitors and it’s kind of fun to be in such an unusual venue. This year however, due to getting involved in the fibre business, I’ve been somewhat distracted and am not nearly as far on with preparations as I should be.

I’m not completely panicked yet but I can feel the level rising with each day. Sometimes you can have a really productive day felting and if that happens I’m sure it’ll turn it all around for me but in the meantime it’s  uncomfortable.

The good news is that if you’re anywhere near Skipton on Friday 12th you are cordially invited to the preview from 7-9pm. the show is open both Saturday and Sunday and at only £1 entrance fee it’s a great way to spend a few hours.

Wish me luck.
