Remarkable Rugs

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

This weekend is the first time I’ve taught a rug making workshop where there have been four rugs on the go at a time. I like to mix up approaches from different countries. It’s a good way for people to experience a range of rug making techniques but it also allows the body to have a breather as we change from one method to the other. At the end of the workshop you have a good idea of techniques available to you but also which ones you like, which can be done alone and which are communal activities.

We’ve used: rubbing, rolling with hands, forearms, legs and ropes, walking on it, bashing with stones, a mallet and a home made tamping tool. This last, thanks to my husband Simon.

It’s made from an old gardening tool handle and a piece of tanalised timber and was well received by most. Ali used it whilst walking on her rug and only hit her foot twice. Result!

We’ve had a really good weekend and there’s been some stunning work produced, which is all the more remarkable when you consider how little experience some people had. I hope to show some more photos soon but here’s a few to be going on with.

Just the weather for felting

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Today is lovely and sunny and just the weather for felt making. I’ve been working on a design forĀ  placemats and table runner which is now in it’s final stage of sampling. If it comes out of the washing machine intact and the same size then I’ll know I’ve got it right and can get on and finish it.

This weekend I’m running a rug making workshop and hoping that we’ll have some good weather so we can get outdoors with the felt.

Waterfront Festival

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Well Saturday was a lovely balmy day down at Clarence Dock. The stalls looked lovely, the stage was set but the people seemed to stay away. Those that did come were looking more than buying and I only covered costs but at least I didn’t lose out.

Sunday was almost gale force winds down by the stage where I was sited. The stall was covered on top and down one side only. Three times I set up my stall and each time the wind tore it apart before I finished. Even larger items like handbags were being swept off by the wind. Eventually I went home without tradingĀ and I wasn’t the only one- really disappointing. Not sure I could face any more outside events, not unless properly protected from the elements.

Visiting Bart

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

The exhibition of curlews at Grassington has been extended until the end of July and artists were informed in case any minor repairs needed to be made. I rang my sponsors ,YDNPA, and asked how Bart was getting along to which the answer was “OK, but his nose has grown with all this rain and he looks like an old man”.

Curious to know more and to see what, if anything, could be done, I went to Grassington this morning to take a look for myself. It wasn’t as bad as I’d feared, his beak had extended about an inch due to the torrential rain we’ve had just recently. So I set to with some soap and water to bring it under control once more.

What a sight I looked standing there with his beak in a jug of water as I tried to soak the felt in readiness for working it. What had previously been a quiet road suddenly seemed thronged with people looking askance at me and asking if I was feeding him. The vigorous rubbing of the felt made him wobble on his stand and altogether I felt more than a little conspicuous. Karen at the YDNPA took a photo of me in action as you can see below. My husband took one look and said “strange woman assaulting a curlew”.

Leeds Waterfront Festival

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

I’m really looking forward to the festival this weekend and keeping my fingers crossed for good weather. All the art stalls are outside but at least we’re covered so hopefully it’ll work out OK.

I’ve never even visited the festival before but there will be lots of activities during the day and I’m hoping it will be fun. This last week has been quite hectic as I’ve worked hard to bump up my stocks – wish me luck and if you’re around come and say hello.
