Nuno bag – part one

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

Nuno felting is the technique of combining wool fibres and fabrics through the wet felting process. Most commonly used in clothing it can also be adapted for other uses like bags. I began with one of the fun parts – choosing fabrics.

The chosen fabrics are silk, silk chiffon, crystal organza and cotton muslin.I laid out the printed silk as an internal pocket then covered it with he crystal organza to form an inner lining. After this I added wool fibres and  further strips of fabric, silk fibres and pencil roving.

Less fibres find their way through synthetic fabrics and so you achieve greater texture. The photo above shows the crystal organza lining and the one below shows the silk pocket.

Below shows the outside of the bag with three different fabrics felted in. As soon as I make a handle and catch ‘ll show you more.

I’m running a nuno bag workshop on Saturday 1st December so you can expect to see one or two more samples between now and then.

It’s love!

I don’t normally like yellow textiles very much but I’m so pleased with the way this bag turned out.

It’s made from merino wool fibres with soya bean fibre decoration on the outside for a little sheen. I love the quirky shape.

The handle is felted in for strength and as you can see, I’ve decorated the outside with extra flowers and some pearl beads. There’s an external pocket on the back.

My original idea was to have the small flowers dotted about on the bag front but I prefer them clustered on the flap. The external fibres are a carded mixture of gold, custard and acid yellow fibres.

The interior is plain gold with white lace flowers for decoration and two handy internal pockets.

I’m so happy and will get this into my shop as soon as I can.

Seamless felt handbag tutorial

I took the photos for this at least two months ago but it’s taken me quite a while to find the time to write it all up. It’s quite a simple bag with no strap but a nice shape and a good bag to begin with.

finished bag

It’s listed on the resources page and there’s also a link to it from the column on the right of this blog. I’d love to receive your comments both good and bad so I can improve it if necessary. Enjoy

One happy daughter

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Two years ago I made my daughter a felt handbag which she’s absolutely delighted with and uses all the time. The handle is a homemade cord which digs in slightly if she overfills the bag. So I thought it was about time I made her a new bag to carry all her rammel (which increases with every year) and which doesn’t dig into her shoulder.

You can see how well worn it is. My daughter really appreciates handmade items and owning things that are unique so I wanted to create something usable, not too large and definitely one of a kind. Let me introduce you to spotty bag.

You’ll notice from the extra wide feature flap that the inside is bright turquoise. The outside is primarily purple with brown spots and some turquoise highlights. The handle was made separately of brown wool and has been threaded through and knotted after felting. Occasionally it’s nice to add the handle later and make more of a feature of it. The handle is nice and thick which means it won’t dig into her shoulder when the bag is full.

The fastening is a cord made from tapestry wool with the ends felted into the flap. No sewing – yippee! A shanked button will be added to complete the fastening mechanism. Perhaps I’ll emebllish with a few beads as well. I even remembered to include a mobile phone pocket on the inside so I have one very happy daughter now. I wonder how long the bag and the happiness will last?

Halloweenish?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I started this bag some time ago whilst teaching the technique in a workshop. As usual, it’s taken me too long to get around to finishing it but here it is at last.

I used off cuts from pre-felts for the shapes, they seemed too good to waste and I even used one to form the flap over the bag opening. The background is carded purples with the addition of dyed throwsters silk waste. After felting I stitched around the shapes to give greater definition, added the button and plaited some embroidery threads to complete the fastening mechanism. To fasten the threads on I left extra long end to the plait which I then sewed into the flap of the bag.

I think I like the finished bag but wonder is it just a bit Halloweenish?

Bags of bags

It was a lovely group of people last week and some fabulous bags as I’m sure you’ll agree.

One of the people who attended was Christine who was kind enough to say “Thanks. I meant to say how much I enjoyed the workshop on Thursday. I never knew felt could be so exciting.” That made my day :)
