We managed a night away in Derbyshire earlier in the week staying at Youlgreave youth hostel. It’s a small hostel, only seven rooms, and was once the local co-op. The village is lovely and so peaceful. On the first day we spent our time wandering around Chatsworth, a place I love to visit. It’s about five years since I was last there and my favourite part is still the gardens where, this year, there are lots of sculptures.

We loved these organic willow structures the most.

This next one is called Revelation and you can see why.

It’s like a physalis isn’t it. We had great fun in the maze and a lovely walk around the estate, ponds and cascade but as ever I was drawn to the kitchen garden. Such beauty in such workaday surroundings.

After all that exercise we had to stop off in Bakewell for a pudding. On the second day we cycled along the Monsal Trail where our daughter made us go at a most inadvisable pace, for which we paid the next day. We followed that with a visit to Stainsby Mill and Hardwick Hall. and topped the day off with a fish and chip summer at Mum’s. One night away can feel so much longer than it really is, why is that?
